The principals of Evaporative Humidification / Cooling
Raising the humidity by passing air through a wetted matrix is a simple and safe way to humidify – with the added benefits of very low running costs and evaporative cooling.
At the heart of the DDSL HumidAir system is the evaporative module, which is installed in an AHU or duct. Water is supplied to the top of a fully bonded particle VapoCell matrix and flows down its corrugated surface. Dry air passes through this moist material picking up water vapour, raising the humidity as it does so. This process consumes very little energy, far less than steam humidifiers or even cold water atomisers.
The water that doesn’t evaporate assists in washing the matrix material and flows into a stainless steel tank at the base of the unit before being re-circulated up onto the matrix via a pump and pipe work delivery system.
Up to 10°C evaporative cooling
The HumidAir system offers up to 10°C of cooling and a very economical alternative or supplement to
mechanical chillers. As the air passes over the cool, wet surface of the HumidAir evaporative VapoCell
matrix, there is a transfer of energy from the warm air which is used to evaporate the water thus lowering the air temperature.
The HumidAir range may not be suitable for applications where existing mechanical cooling is present. There are however, instances when VapoCell pads can be incorporated into existing systems to assist condensing temperatures in high summer. HumidAir provides virtually free-cooling and reduces the costs of humidification in winter when the air is cold with low moisture content.
Installation
The HumidAir is easily retrofit into existing air handling equipment (manufactured to suit) with only four simple connections: a gravity drain, an overflow which feeds into the drain, a direct water connection (a WRAS compliant double non-return check valve must be fitted), lastly a suitable power connection to the control panel.

Vapocell has been designed and optimised for use within air handling units to form an integral part of a high efficiency, cost effective evaporative humidification or adiabatic cooling system.
It is produced by the overlaying and bonding of PVC based fibre sheets, to provide a rigid cross fluted multi-angle matrix pad.
This multi-angle fluted design continually directs air through the matrix in such a way to maximize evaporation and furthermore efficiency of the pads. The specially formulated design ensures minimal pressure drop across the pad.
The use of this type of panel offers several advantages in comparison to traditional models, the principal of which are :-
The absence of resins used during the manufacture of the panels ensures the absence of related odour.
Due to the inert properties of the matrix material being non biological or chemically degradable, the pads are able to withstand continued cleaning of the product with diluted chemicals used to wash the pads during routine maintenance to ensure maximum efficiency and product lifetime.
Its modular construction means it can be easily adapted to fit any duct or AHU dimension.
Passing air through the wetted matrix is a simple, cost effective and efficient way of raising humidity with the added benefit of the constant running water cleansing the pad to prevent mineral build up and bacterial growth. The process of raising the humidity uses far less water than traditional steam or atomised water systems.
An integral stainless steel tank provides sufficient water to satisfy the thirstiest of systems and provides a solid base for the upright frames and panels. The base tank contains the circulation pump, fill solenoid, level control float and also bleed off and drain connections. We can manufacture the units to suit any size and hand by request.
